Derry - Londonderry

We began our day in Derry - Londonderry on Monday, June 30. Here are some shots as we took a quick tour bus through the city. Then, after the tour bus, we began walking around various areas of interest...

Depending on your political views or past background, or family ties, Derry is also known as Londonderry. Wall murals painted during The Troubles depicting their plight....over those who wanted to remain part of the United Kingdom and those that wanted to become part of the Republic of Ireland.

Derry is the walled city that was begun in 1613 with the wall being completed in 1619 to defend it from Irish insurgents who opposed the plantation that was organized by the London livery companies as part of the Plantation of Ulster.
During WWII, the city played an important role as it was the first American Naval base in Europe and housed other allied navies.

Standing on top of the wall, the city streets below it and one of the 4 gates into the city.

After touring the city, it was time to stop at a local pub for lunch.....of course!!
